myself/yourself/themselves

■ 재귀대명사. 주어와 목적어가 같을 때 사용

단수: myself, yourself, himself/herself/itself

복수: ourselves, yourselves, themselves

ex 1) I don't want you to pay for me. I'll pay for myself.

ex 2) Do you talk to yourself sometimes?

talk to yourself 혼잣말하다

ex 3) If you want more to eat, help yourselves.

Help yourself. (음식 등을) 마음대로 드시오.

 

■ feel/relax/concentrate/meet 뒤에는 재귀대명사를 사용하지 않음

ex 1) I feel nervous. I can't relax.

ex 2) You have to try and concentrate.

 

■ -selves와 each other 비교

ex. -selves) Kate and Joe stood in front of the mirror and looked at themselves.

ex. each other) They looked at each other.

 

■ each other 대신 one another 사용 가능

ex) How long have you and Bill known each other / one another?

 

■ 재귀대명사는 강조의 의미로도 사용

ex ) "Who repaired you bicycle for you?" "I repaired it myself."

 

연습

myself/yourself 등 + 아래의 동사를 알맞은 형태로 써 넣어 문장 완성하기.

blame, burn, enjoy, express, hurt, introduce, put

ex 1) Steve introduced himself to the other guests at the party.

✅ 2) Bill fell down some steps, but fortunately he didn't hurt himself badly.

step 미국·영국 [step] 1. (발)걸음, 2. 걸음걸이, 3. (거리를 나타내는) 걸음, 보폭

fortunately 미국식 [ˈfɔːrtʃ-] 영국식 [ˈfɔːtʃənətli] 다행스럽게도, 운 좋게도

✅ 3) It isn't Sue's fault. She really shouldn't blame herself.

❌ 4) Please try and understand how I feel. You put yourself in my position.

=> Put yourself

✅ 5) The children had a great time at the beach. They really enjoyed themselves.

✅ 6) Be careful! That pan is very hot. Don't burn yourself.

✅ 7) Sometimes I can't say exactly what I mean. I wish I could express myself better.

 

빈칸에 myself/yourself/ourselves 등의 재귀대명사 또는 me/you/us 등의 목적격 대명사를 써 넣기.

ex 1) Julia had a great vacation. She enjoyed herself.

✅ 2) It’s not my fault. You can’t blame me.

✅ 3) What I did was really bad. I’m ashamed of myself.

ashamed 미국·영국 [əˈʃeɪmd] 1. (~여서) 부끄러운, 2. (~ 하기가) 부끄러운

be ashamed of 볼 낯이 없다

✅ 4) We've got a problem. I hope you can help us.

✅ 5) “Can I have another cookie?” “Of course. Help yourself!""

❌ 6) I want you to meet Sarah. I’ll introduce myself to her.

=> you

✅ 7) Don't worry about Tom and me. We can take care of ourselves.

take care of somebody/something/yourself 1. ~을 돌보다; ~에 주의하다, 2. ~에 대한 책임이 있다; ~을 처리하다

✅ 8) I gave them a key to our house so that they could let themselves in.

❌ 9) I didn’t want anybody to see the letters, so I burned myself.

=> them

 

아래의 동사를 알맞는 형태로 써 넣어 문장을 완성하기. 필요 시 myself/yourself/ 등을 함게 사용.

concentrate, defend, dry, feel, meet, relax

ex 1) I was sick yesterday, but I feel much better today.

✅ 2) She climbed out of the swimming pool and dried herself with a towel.

climb out of …에서 기어나오다.

✅ 3) I tried to study, but I couldn’t concentrate.

✅ 4) If somebody attacks you, you need to be able to defend yourself.

💡 5) I’m going out with Chris tonight. We're meet at 7:30.

=> meeting

✅ 6) You're always rushing around. Why don't you sit down and relax?

 

재귀대명사 또는 each other를 사용하여 문장 완성하기.

ex 1) How long have you and Bill known each other?

✅ 2) If people work too hard, they can make themselves sick.

✅ 3) I need you and you need me. We need each other.

✅ 4) In the U.S., friends often give each other presents at Christmas.

✅ 5) Some people are very selfish. They think only of themselves.

selfish 미국식 [ˈselfɪʃ] 이기적인

✅ 6) Tracy and I don't see each other very often these days.

✅ 7) We couldn't get back into the house. We had locked ourselves out.

lock somebody/yourself out (of something) 문을 잠가 ~가 (~에) 못 들어가게 하다

✅ 8) They've had an argument. They're not speaking to each other at the moment.

argument 미국식 [ˈɑːrɡ-] 영국식 [ˈɑːɡjumənt] 1. 논쟁; 언쟁, 말다툼, 2. 논거, 주장, 3. 논의

✅ 9) We'd never met before, so we introduced ourselves to each other.

 

myself/yourself/itself 등을 사용하여 질문에 대한 대답 완성하기.

ex 1) Who repaired the bicycle for you?

-> Nobody. I repaired it myself.

2) Who cuts Brian's hair for him?

❌ -> Nobody. He cuts himself.

=> it himself

3) Do you want me to mail that letter for you?

❌ -> No, I'll mail myself.

=> mail / do it myself

4) Who told you that Linda was getting married?

✅ -> Linda herself told me.

=> told me herself / did herself

5) Can you call John for me?

❌ -> Why can't you call yourself?

=> call him yourself / do it yourself
