Medium - How to Stop Overthinking

출처: https://forge.medium.com/how-to-stop-overthinking-c3a98e81dc2a

How to Stop Overthinking

You’re missing out on what’s in front of you

miss out on …

How many hours per day do you think?

‍♂️ Q. How many hours do you think "per day"?

“I never thought about that,” you’re probably saying.

So let me get this straight: You’re thinking all the time, and yet you never consider how much time you spend thinking.

all the time 1.

That sounds like an addiction to me.

(an) addiction to …

I know, because I’m addicted to thinking, too.

Overthinking is a common problem, but when it gets out of hand it can lead to sleep disruption, “analysis paralysis,” and even threaten mental health.

It’s also a difficult one to diagnose, let alone cure.

diagnose 미국식 [ˌdaɪəɡˈnoʊs] 영국식 [ˈdaɪəɡnəʊz;-ˈnəʊz] (질병·문제의 원인을) 진단하다

When I eat too much, I can say, “I’m overeating. I need to eat less.”

When I work too much, I can say, “I’m getting burned out. I need to stop working.”

When I drink too much, I can say, “I need to stop. I need a bottle of water.”

But when I think too much, it’s not enough to just say “I’m overthinking.”

I need a different approach to unclog my brain.

The problem is that most people don’t consider overthinking a problem.

When someone criticizes overthinking, we often assume that the problem is dwelling upon or spiraling through negative thoughts.

= on 2.

We tend to assume, by the same token, that positive thoughts are good.

token 미국식 [ˈtoʊ-] 영국식 [ˈtəʊkən] 1.

But it’s a mistake to assume all positive thoughts are good.

What most self-help advice says is to scrap the negative thoughts and double down on the positive thoughts.

On the surface, this sounds like good advice.

But the truth is that when you overuse your brain, for positive or negative, it can get clogged just like a drain.

The result? Foggy thinking.

‍♂️ Q. Foggy thinking

foggy 미국식 [ˈfɔːɡi;ˈfɑːɡi] 영국식 [ˈfɒɡi] 안개가 낀

Which leads to bad decision- making.

You are not your thoughts

Thinking isn’t considered a habit to curb because it’s so closely connected to our core identities.

identity (←identities) 미국·영국 [aɪˈdentəti] [명사] ID 신원, 신분, 정체

No one said it better than Marcus Aurelius in Meditations: “Our life is what our thoughts make it.”

What he’s saying is that our lives are shaped by the quality of our thoughts.

I believe in that. However, most of us assume that we are our thoughts.

We say: “Well, I can’t help but think these things. That’s just me.”

No, that’s not you.

You can decide what thoughts to ignore.

I like how Eckhart Tolle puts it in The Power Of Now: “The beginning of freedom is the realization that you are not the possessing entity — the thinker.”

put something in 1.

The only way to stop identifying yourself with your thoughts is to stop following through on all your thoughts.

identify somebody with something ~를 ~라고 여기다

Instead, decide to live in the present moment — where you don’t have time to think, only to experience.

How do you live in the present moment?

Thinking is a tool.

Instead of using that tool constantly during the 16 or 17 hours that you’re awake, pull it out to use it when you need it.

pull somebody/something out (of something) ~을 (~에서) 떼어 내다

But how do you do that?

Here’s the four-step process I’ve used to stop overthinking:

1) Raise your awareness throughout the day.

throughout 미국·영국 [θruːˈaʊt] 1. …

Realize that too much thinking leads you away from your goals, not toward them.

2) Start observing your thoughts.

Every time you begin a thought, don’t follow through on it.

Instead, simply notice that you started thinking.

notice 미국식 [ˈnoʊ-] [동사] 1. …

When you do that, your brain won’t get carried away.

carry away 1. …

3) Limit your thinking to dedicated times.

For example, when journaling or setting your daily priorities, sit down and really think.

Give yourself a specific amount of time — say, 15 minutes.

During those moments, it’s perfectly fine to follow through on your thoughts.

What we’re trying to stop is the constant thinking.

4) Enjoy your life.

Let go of all your thoughts about yesterday and tomorrow.

No matter how much you want to achieve in the future, and no matter how much you’ve suffered in the past, appreciate that you are alive now.

I’m not going to sit here and tell you to “enjoy doing the dishes.”

That’s not my style.

When I’m doing something I dislike, I’ve learned to just do it without judgment.

But when I’m doing something I actually like, no matter how big or small, I genuinely enjoy it.

When I’m listening to music, watching a movie, or spending time with my family, friends, or my girlfriend , that’s when I’m in the moment.

I don’t think about my goals, failures, or things I have to do tomorrow.

I’m just here. Right now.

Just like the moment that you’re taking to read these words.

When it’s gone, it’s gone forever.

Realize that on a deeper level, and you’ll never even dare to leave the present.

Are you with me? Don’t think too much about it.

Grammar in use intermediate

ex case 1) 동사구 + 목적어 = I turned on the light.

ex case 2) 동사구 앞 + 목적어 + 동사구 뒤 = I turned the light on.

★ 목적어가 대명사(it/them/me/him 등)일 경우, 목적어는 가운데에 위치해야 함.

A - along / away / back / forward / in / up

Hi there! How are you guys?

I am so excited about this episode.

Because, I am finally going to do a "Draw my Life".

My parents got stuck in a snow storm in Wisconsin on March 9th.

I know that because, that's the the day I was born.

They got so stuck on the way to the hospital...

They had to flag down a snowplow.

flag somebody/something down ~에게 정지 신호를 하다

Bart, the driver, got us to the hospital safely so my dad wanted to name me after him but my mom said "no".

Thank you mom!

My sisters, Stacy and skipper were also born in Wisconsin.

And yes, we all like cheese and the Packers. Go Packers!

I loved growing up in Wisconsin and it only got better when my sisters were born.

We loved these two trees in our backyard.

I was really active.

I was climbing them and falling out of them... even broke my arm once.

My friends drew pictures of daisy flowers all over my cast.

all over 1.

My Grand dad would take us on the best treasure hunts.

treasure hunt 보물찾기

And in the winter, ice skating on the lake...

It just seemed so big back then but this summer I saw that lake and it was just a cute little pond.

But that's just me. I've always had a big imagination.

I used to get in trouble in kindergarten for making up stories and day dreaming.

get in trouble 곤란에 처하다

kindergarten 미국식 [-dərɡɑːrtn] 영국식 [ˈkɪndəɡɑːtn] 1. 유아원

make something up 1.

But, my parents never really got angry.

Well, accept for this one time.. I decided that my dad's black, cashmere sweater would make a perfect dress for Stacy.

accept for …

A couple cuts here, a couple cuts there and... Voila! a dress.

Let's just say I haven't done that since.

My life changed in a big way when I was eight.

in a big [great, large] way

We left Wisconsin and moved to Malibu, California.

I was so excited to learn how to surf but... I would miss trees, the winter and my Grandparents.

And then there was the new school. I was already shy. and then I became even more shy.

But, over time I realized I could be whoever I wanted to be.

Be funny. Be goofy. Just be me.

And, I made friends who liked me for me.

Chelsea was born in California.

She has such a crazy spirit.

Once, we even had a contest to see who could out prank the other.

prank2 화려하게 차려입다 ((with)), 모양내다 ((out, up))

Chelsea put googly eyes on the eggs in the fridge.

googly 1.

I made Chelsea an ice cream sundae... made with mashed potatoes.

And then, one hot day, Chelsea replaced the soda with a mix of soy sauce and seltzer...uuck.

seltzer 미국식 [ˈseltzə(r)] 탄산수

I should have known when I saw her giggling and my dad trying to warn me that she was up to something.

And, as they say, the rest is history.
